FYI, Van was on Facebook last night and confirmed the appearances on THE MENTALIST, and DATING RULES FROM MY FUTURE SELF as reported in Soap Opera Digest – so more Van to look forward to in early 2012!

OCCUPANT DVD update

In the meantime, speaking of Facebook, the makers of OCCUPANT were online this past Thursday to say that the DVD that was on sale on Amazon was a fake. The good news is they say “as son as the DVD is ready for sale,” so it sounds like they will definitely still release it (maybe we can look forward to a busy VANuary?).

I did a quick search on the Google cache, and this is the image:

The Amazon ASIN for this listing is B006GGNCV6 and it is currently showing as “unavailable,” so stay away from this one. As someone pointed out, buying bootleg DVDs puts money in the pockets of the pirates, not the actors and filmmakers in the form of residuals.

DATING RULES FROM MY FUTURE SELF

Speaking of DATING RULES, I was surprised to see that the “web series” already has a pretty well populated IMDb page, and it’s listed as a “TV Series” – go, team!

This is likely because the series has what appears to be a very experienced production team – Alloy Entertainment. They list among their producing credits, THE VAMPIRE DIARIES, THE SECRET CIRCLE, WENDY, GOSSIP GIRL, PRIVILEGED, HUGE, PRETTY LITTLE LIARS, and THE LYING GAME, AND THE SISTERHOOD OF THE TRAVELLING PANTS films.

The plot summary goes on to say: “A girl gets romantic advice from herself ten years in the future via text message.”

If you ask me, the premise sounds pretty good, and the name says it all – but it is just a little too similar to 8 SIMPLE RULES FOR DATING MY TEENAGE DAUGHTER (which, I didn’t realize until just now, actually officially shortened its name to 8 SIMPLE RULES).

I think this is the role Van described as small, “but I get to be funny,” and was the part he didn’t have to audition for – go, Van!

He’s not listed in the IMDb credits (yet), but the series is showing a 9 January 2012 release date. However, a fairly lengthy episode list has been posted:

• Season 1, Episode 1: Chapter One: Who R U?
• Season 1, Episode 2: Chapter Two: What is Luv?
• Season 1, Episode 3: Chapter Three: Change YR World
• Season 1, Episode 5: Chapter Five: Be YR Own Wingwoman
• Season 1, Episode 6: Chapter Six: Try 2 Connect
• Season 1, Episode 7: Chapter Seven: Keep Calm and Carry On
• Season 1, Episode 8: Chapter Eight: Time 2 Intervene
• Season 1, Episode 9: Chapter Nine: Luv Yrself

No episode details are available yet, but if Van’s right about being on episode 7 (love the British reference!), and it’s a weekly series released on Mondays (like January 9), then that would put his episode date at approx. February 20.

Oh well, a long wait for us fans, but it sounds like a good crew to know for Van. Good stuff.

NIKITA factoid

Last, I was just on Van’s IMDb, and it’s starting to look really good with all his new credits added! (Though he really needs an official image so he shows up under “recently viewed” with a picture!

At any rate, one new bit of trivia: his character from NIKITA has a last name, so he played “Yuri Levrov”.

And to think – I walked right by this on the newsstand yesterday!

Soap Opera Digest ran a very lengthy interview with updates on Van’s whereabouts including mentions of his work in OCCUPANT, PSYCH, and NIKITA. There is definitely news in the report, which, assuming the article is 100% correct, is:

• Van’s booked an appearance on THE MENTALIST (a CBS series with a similar premise to PSYCH, but starring Simon Baker, who was quite charming in THE DEVIL WEARS PRADA – well, at least until his character showed his true colors)
• The “brief but funny” appearance and a web series will be in DATING RULES FROM MY FUTURE SELF which starts in January
• He’s been in touch with quite a number of the younger ATWT alums including Jess Soffer (Will), Jennifer Landon (Gwen), Alexandra Chandro (Maddie), Zach Roerig (oldCasey), and Tala Ashe (Ameera)

Last, Van says,

It was awesome to see [Jake Silbermann when he was in LA for Stuffer]. I’m also excited to tune into Eric’s [Sheffer Stevens] new show [I HATE MY TEENAGE DAUGHTER]. From what I’ve seen, he’s a slacker dad, which is very different from Reid!

Guess he’s figured out how to juggle his fanbases and stay out of the doghouse – mention both Jake AND Eric….in the same sentence! 🙂

Tonight’s Episode

Episode 3 of Eric Sheffer Stevens’s I HATE MY TEENAGE DAUGHTER airs tonight 9.30pm/8.30pm C – to be repeated again between midnight and 12:30 a.m. early Sunday morning. The episode to be aired is called ‘Teenage Cotillion.’

Personally, I’m looking forward to watching the episode live on a real TV – only the second chance I’ll have had to see Eric on a real TV (as opposed to a streaming clip or YouTube).

The previews for tonight’s episode are interesting. The episode, ‘Teenage Cotillion’ is about a daddy-daughter dance. Not surprisingly, it’s a good episode for Eric’s character, Matt, but what does surprise me is that the focus of the previews, at least, is all on Eric, not on both dads, especially given the teaser a the end of FOX’s press release for this episode (courtesy of Futon Critic):

‘Preview #1: Lots of Eric! Prepare to swoon!

[spoiler]Okay, this to me is a little like “Reid turns in his stethoscope.” Lavender? Really? Her favorite flower is lavender? Maybe her favorite scent is lavender, but who actually wants a corsage that looks a little like a weed? Am I way off base here? Just for fun, I Googled “lavender corsage” (yeah, I know, I’m procrastinating BIG TIME right now) and a bunch of lavender-colored corsages come up, but they’re all made of other flowers – like roses! So whoever put in this line about him remembering her favorite flower – the concept is adorable, but the research could use a bit of assistance.

Meanwhile, the delivery on, “Yeah, it’s ‘cause you were dancing with me.”? ***melt*** Just scrape me up, I’m a puddle of goo. I just wish I felt that goo-potential more between Annie and Matt.[/spoiler]

Plus Reid fans note, he’s still bouncing as he walks. I think that must be an Eric-ism.

Preview #2: Less Eric, but guess who the girls are talking about here?

[spoiler]I loved Jaime conveniently dropping her rag as she tries to casually mention that they watched a movie together, and Katie’s response to Matt and Annie having a bottle of wine together was priceless.

But overall, the punchline about Annie being in “love with two brothers”. Jaime’s making all the right motions, but I’m still feeling “teenage crush” on Jack, and I’m not feeling the mutual chemistry/heat for either pairing yet.

I adore the camaraderie I’ve seen in Jaime/Katie interviews – the actresses have great chemistry, and I’m starting to see that come across on the screen, too. I’ve also liked the chemistry between the guys, both Eric/Kevin and Eric/Chad, and that’s starting to come across as well. But I wonder if (in addition to the name problem) FOX has made another marketing blunder here in keeping the promos focused on either the moms, the daughters, OR the guys? I definitely sense a friendly group, but I don’t think the chemistry between the the couples is convincing…yet.[/spoiler]

Preview #3: Another clip with no Eric (though the photos give away more), but again, he is clearly the focus of the on-screen conversations.

SpoilerTV has posted the high-res versions of the seriously wub-worthy photos from this week’s IHMTD episode, ‘Teenage Cotillion.’ (Click on the images for even higher-res versions).

SpoilerTV has also posted promo photos from Episode 4, which, sadly, don’t include Eric (it looks to be a big episode for Kevin Rahm, though). This may be one of the episodes he wasn’t in, as ESS fans who went to some of the tapings reported that he was unavailable (not sure if it was because he had other projects in the works!). If nothing else, it feels very strange to hear the episode referred to as their “winter finale episode.” They just got started!

I still maintain that the show’s name was a mistake. I think FOX secretly regrets it as evidenced by their backpedalling opening logo:

Besides the early promo video of Jaime Pressly and Katie Finneran answering “Fans’ Facebook questions” by video – in which, coincidentally, the only question “answered” was, “Why the title?” the cutesy logo, to me at least, shouts – “No! We were only kidding, we don’t really hate our teenage daughters! We really love them! We just wanted to capture viewers’ attention with a gimmicky show name!”

Instead, what they’ve done, is given lazy headline-writers and automatic easy punchline, and an excuse to harsh on a show they hadn’t even seen yet. Bad move, FOX.

According to Futon Critic,the full first series (and FOX’s initial order) was for 13 episodes, which finish filming next week. The penultimate episode tapes tonight, and free tickets for next week’s season finale taping, Tuesday, 20th December, at the Warner Brothers studios in Los Angeles are still available via the Audiences Unlimited website.

Here’s hoping it’s back for the spring!

Okay, the episode naming still bugs the heck out of me, but I LOVE the fact that the moms score one in this clip.
