Reid: What’s this? Katie hands Reid a box.

Katie: It’s something to remind you of Oakdale. Reid and Katie laugh.

Reid: Handcuffs?

Katie: Well, a keychain, with little mini handcuffs….I know you’re not gonna keep in touch, but I am. I’m gonna send you pictures of Jacob every month.

Reid: Digital photos only. I can’t get baby pictures in the mail. It’s bad for my image.

Katie: Okay, yeah, well. I’ll keep that in mind.

Reid picks up Jacob as Luke walks by and looks on curiously.

Reid: So long, sport. Bad luck having to grow up in this town. But you sure did ace it the mom department, you know that?

Katie: Aw. Luke eavesdrops while pretending to read.

Reid: You keep her out of trouble, all right? So don’t try to do everything yourself. Make sure to get out, get some “you” time.

Katie: Or what? You’ll come back and kick my butt?

Reid: Don’t get your hopes up.

Katie: I really wish you didn’t have to leave. If Henry would just donate that money to the hospital, you could stay. I don’t understand why he’s being so selfish?!

Reid: It’s just Hank being Hank…All right, don’t get all weepy. I got you something too. I didn’t wrap it, though.

Katie: Okay. Reid hands her a business card. Katie gasps.

Katie: Oh! A business card! You shouldn’t have!

Reid: That’s what I’m thinkin’….Turn it over.

Katie: What’s this? Your home number?

Reid: That’s my beeper number. Nobody has that except the hospital, and now you. Now you call that, anytime. If you have any kind of problem, day or night….You know, Mr Snyder, you’ve been eavesdropping long enough to figure out that this is a private conversation. Reid turns to Luke.

Reid: Go away. Luke pretends to read his book again and tries (very unsuccessfully) to look innocent.

Luke: I wasn’t eavesdropping. I’ve just never seen you be nice like that before.

Katie: Yeah, I’m trying to work on that with him.

Reid: Some people deserve kindness; others are like you.

Luke: Are you saying you’re rude to me because I deserve it?

Katie: No, that’s not what he’s saying. (Whispers to Reid) Just stop! Katie’s cell phone warbles and she looks at it and gasps. Oh my god!

Reid: What is it?

Katie: Um, I’m not sure yet. You’re not leaving for an hour or so, right?

Reid: At least, why?

Katie: Ok, um. I have to go. Just make sure you do NOT leave without saying goodbye.

Reid: I thought we just did that!

Katie: That was a warm-up! Stay put. I’ll see you soon. Bye, Luke! Katie quickly leaves, pushing Jacob’s stroller.

Luke: So. Are you and Noah driving to the airport together?

Reid: Pulling out his cell phone. What am I? His seeing eye dog? Are we joined at the hip?

Luke: Will you be sitting next to him on the plane?

Reid sits down on the bench and starts to check messages and surfing on his phone, ignoring Luke. Luke taps Reid on the shoulder.

Luke: Hey! I’m talking to you.

Reid: And yet I’m not listening…Aw c’mon, you’ve got to be kidding me!

Luke: What’s wrong? Is it Noah? Did something happen to him?

Reid: There’s nothing wrong with your boyfriend, all right? My flight to Dallas got delayed. It’s like this town has tentacles….I need a drink. Reid gets up to leave.

Luke: You know, Dr Oliver? I think I could help you with that.

Reid: Going the rest of the day without seeing your face in this godforsaken town would be helpful indeed.

Luke: I can let you borrow my private plane. That way you and Noah can get to Dallas whenever you like.

Reid: As tempting as the offer is, it has one very large drawback.

Luke: What’s that? Reid: It comes from you.

Reid turns his back and leaves.

Reid is sitting at the bar at the Lakeview when Luke walks by (looking for him), spots him, and enters.

Reid: Seriously? Is there no place in this town that I can go to avoid you?

Luke: Look, if you don’t want to take my jet, that’s fine. But could you, for once, think about Noah.

Reid: Noah can get to Dallas however he wants to; I’m gonna fly commercial. Reid gets up and walks from the bar to a couch.

Luke: Why? Because I’M offering this to you? Do you have any idea how childish that sounds?

Reid: Yup. But it’s nt as ridiculous as you chasing me all over town because I whining that I’m not gonna play with your toy. Luke pulls up a chair and sits down.

Reid: Oh my god, you’re sitting down?

Luke: You know, I think that there’s something else going on here.

Reid: And what would that be?

Luke: Well, you tell me. You’re so anxious to leave Oakdale. I give you a solution that could cut three hours off your travel time and you turn me down because it comes from me. Now who does that?

Reid: I’m unique.

Luke: No. See, I don’t think this has to do with me throwing my money around or how I got you to Oakdale.

Reid: And your keen instinct tells you what?

Luke: You wouldn’t treat me this way if I was the straight husband or wife of one of your patients. You don’t respect me and Noah because we’re gay – that’s it.

Luke: This isn’t funny! Reid: You think I’m homophobic. That’s hysterical.

Luke: Why don’t you let me in on the joke, doctor? What, is your best friend gay? Or your mom? Or your dad? Who?

Reid: Me, Mr Snyder. I’m gay.

Luke: You’re messing with me. You’re not gay!

Reid: You’re requiring proof? How would that work exactly?

Luke: Well you never mentioned anything! Are you really that deep in the closet?

Reid: Mr Snyder, I’ve known that I was gay since I was nine years old. I can assure you that in all that time, I’ve never once hidden, apologized for, or been ashamed of who I am.

Luke: Well, THAT, I can believe. But you never said anything to Noah or me.

Reid: Why WOULD I?

Luke: Because it could have helped.

Reid: What, so that we could share the secret handshake?

Luke: It’s called relating, Dr Oliver. You meet someone; you learn things about them. You find what you have in common and then you get along better.

Reid: So you’re telling me that if I had told you that I’m a Pisces yet ironically allergic to fish, you and I would have bonded?

Luke: Maybe.

Reid: Here’s the thing Mr Snyder – I don’t want to bond with you. And unlike you, I don’t feel obligated to spill my guts all over whoever happens to be within range.

Reid is drinking a coffee on the bench outside in Old Town. Katie arrives.

Katie: What do you want more than anything?

Reid: To wake up and discover that the last few months have been one tragic nightmare.

Katie: Henry decided to donate his inheritance to the hospital. He’s going to build that wing for you! So, I just have to get Bob to sign on and you’ll be good to go…or good to stay, as the case may be.

Reid: I’m sorry you went to all that trouble for nothing.

Katie: What do you mean? Even if they build the wing, you’re not going to stay?

Reid: I don’t belong here. My life is back in Dallas. The sooner I can get the hell out of here, the better. Reid stands up to leave as Katie watches him go.

This tutorial covers transferring videos from DVD or your hard drive (including videos downloaded from YouTube) onto your iPod. If you use a different brand of MP3 player, the method is probably similar, but I don’t own one, so I can’t help you there.  Sorry.

Copying MP4s to your iPod

Once you have MP4 videos on your hard drive, you can simply drag them into iTunes, or within iTunes, from the File menu choose Add Files to Library.  Then add the videos to a Playlist and then sync your iPod.

Ripping Videos from DVD

If you have videos on DVD (or on your hard drive in a format other than MP4) you will need to “rip” them from the DVD and/or convert them to MP4 in order to view them on your iPod. There are dozens of products on the market that will do the job, but one which I adore is called MagicDVDRipper.  This product will rip from DVD into a variety of different formats including MP4 and WMV, and will also allow you to designate the desired resolution and sound quality so you can go for a smaller file if preferred.  Another favorite feature of mine is the ability to either rip DVDs by scene or all in one.

I am an American living overseas, so I travel. A lot.  As in logged over 100,000 miles in the last 4 years. With my two young children. Without my husband.

MagicDVDRipper has been a lifesaver.  I use the rip-by-movie option to carry low-res versions of feature films for my daughter on my laptop.  This keeps me from lugging DVDs around, and also prolongs battery life – key on those transatlantic flights where my daughter can’t sleep. I usually travel with a library of about 20-30 movies on my laptop. This has come in very handy on flights where the entertainment system is malfunctioning, or the movie is very much NOT PG/PG-13.

Using the rip-by-scene option, I carry about 6 hours worth of toddler videos on my iPod (Thomas the Tank Engine, Sesame Street, the Wiggles). I also travel with a portable speaker (another one of the best inventions since sliced bread) and my toddler can help himself to videos on demand.

The Icing on the Cake: Cyanics Portable Swing Speakers

The Cyanics speaker is one of the best products I’ve seen. I use it with my iPod Nano 4G.  It basically adds a small amount of thickness to the ultra-slim iPod, and no additional width or length. Still tiny enough to fit in all but the skinniest of skinny jean pockets without leaving a lump. The iPod slides into the clear plastic housing which acts as a protective case, and the speaker seems to get some charge from the iPod itself (I can only imagine it does because we use ours a lot – we have two – and I have only charged them 3 or 4 times in the last year).

The default mode of operation is to twist the speaker portion 90 degrees to activate it.  Alternatively, you can keep it turned to match the iPod and there is a manual on-off switch as well.  It’s durable (I can’t tell you how many times ours have been dropped), and the sound is remarkably loud and decent for this teeny tiny speaker.  I cannot say enough good things about this product. It retails for about $20 at Amazon.com.

For many of us, YouTube is our lifeline.  We have no way of watching LuRe live on-air because we are at work/school/have children too young to watch with us, or live abroad.  Downloading YouTube videos to your hard drive is easy and free. I personally prefer using FireFox over Internet Explorer for a few reasons (though either will work):

• I am running Windows 7 64-bit edition and Flash (and hence YouTube) won’t run in IE 64-bit.
• The Internet Explorer method described below (using KeepVid.com) sometimes doesn’t work for any good reason.
• The FireFox method is much simpler (many fewer steps) and seems to run faster.

Choosing file formats

Regardless of which method you use, you will be able to select from the formats available (automatically generated by YouTube based on the video uploaded).  If available, I always download the Full HD versions because the color and clarity are SO much nicer!  For fanvids, I generally use regular MP4 because that’s all that’s available, and mixing the Full HD with MP4 can be distracting. These are also the ones I carry on my iPod.

Some thoughts to help you choose:

• FLV – Flash video.  Smaller than MP4 files (20MB vs 33MB for a 4-minute video), but not as easy to read. FLV files cannot be played on an iPod or in iTunes, and may play in Windows Media Player depending on your version. WMP requires a codec (decoder) to read it, which is complicated. Also cannot be read by many video editing programs.
• MP4 (480 x 360) – Can be read by WMP, iTunes and iPods without any additional intervention, and can be read by most video editing programs.
• 3GP – I personally haven’t used this, so thanks to Cc for clarifying in the comments that this is for mobile applications (no surprise I haven’t used this, then – my phone is way older, clunkier, and more primitive than those our teenage babysitters’!). Though many newer phones also support MP4s, these vids are TINY – 3MB for 4 minutes (vs 15MB for MP4), so you may want to choose 3GP to squeeze a few more in.
• HD (1280 x 720) and Full HD (1920 x 1080) – higher resolution MP4s.  These files will generally look better, but can be VERY big.  For example, a 5-minute video in regular MP4 is 18MB vs 138MB in Full HD.

If you use FireFox,

• Launch FireFox
• From the Tools menu, choose Add-Ons
• Click on the Get Add-Ons button

• In the Search box, type YouTube
• Look for Easy YouTube Viideo Downloader; if you see it, click on it, then click on the Add to Firefox button
• If you don’t see the Easy YouTube Video Downloader on the short list provided, click on the See All Results link at the bottom

• Look for the option called Easy YouTube Video Downloader (I’m running  version 4.0)  1-Click YouTube Video Download
• Click on the Add to FireFox button
• You should have to do the above steps only once.
• Then, in FireFox, browse to the desired video.

• Below the video, just to the right of above the Comments box, you should see a drop-down menu with an orange arrow links for downloads. The options listed may include  MP4 360p, FLV 360p, MP4 1080p, and MP3 among others.  These may include FLV, MP4, 3GP, HD and FULL HD. Choose your preferred file format.
• You’ll be prompted to choose a filename ane location then voila – you should have a video that can be viewed using Windows Media Player, iTunes, QuickTime, iPod, etc.
  
• This method is very reliable, but not perfect. I have occasionally found (especially when trying to download Anthony’s clips immediately after posting, that it will appear to download, but will actually fail). I’m guessing this is a server overload issue.  I have never failed to have it work if I try again (either in a few minutes or in an hour or so).
  

If you use Internet Explorer,

• Browse to the YouTube page that contains the video you want to download.
• Copy the URL out of the Address bar – for example, Part 1 of HappyInChintz72’s Reid Oliver story has a URL that looks like: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QdZqnw6s6U0 (it’s fine if the URL has extra stuff in it if you’ve copied it from a playlist or channel window)
• Open a second Internet Explorer Window or Tab (if you use a version of IE that has tabs, just click on a blank tab; otherwise use the File menu to select New Window)
• In the second IE window, browse to https://www.keepvid.com
• Paste the YouTube address into the URL box at the top and click the Download button

• If you get a message about allowing the application to run, or installing Java, confirm that it’s okay to proceed.
• You’ll see a Processing Links ticker appear.
• If you get a message about no links being found, confirm you have pasted the URL properly and that there isn’t a stray space at the beginning or end and try again. Sometimes this is just flakey and will tell you there isn’t a valid video available.  Try removing any playlist or channel information from the URL so it looks more like the one above and try again. If it still doesn’t work, give it a rest and try again later – I have never failed to download a video from YouTube, but it has often taken many tries using this method (and generally takes more tries than the FireFox method above).

Summary: Train? What train. Following their first Christmas together, Luke and Reid embark on journeys of self-discovery. Can two simple gifts lead to a happily ever after?

[spoiler name=A/N]UPDATE, 17 Oct 2010: When I first started this, I thought it might be 6-8 chapters long. Now, after 75,000 words and 26 chapters, it’s playing out more like a serial – a soap opera, even – and is taking just as long to develop. Updates are (unfortunately) lumpy in frequency due to RL (darn family! darn job! no, seriously – I love my family!). I have 10,000 words of future chapter notes and enough ideas to probably double the length of this (or more). I WILL write this to a “conclusion” (though there are a few stopping points plotted out)(, though I have no idea when I’ll get there.

Also, FYI, this story was started in May and intermittently updated throughout the summer. It largely sticks to canon until early August. So Mona Cross did happen in this universe, and Chris and Reid do have to duke it out for the COS position, but Chris’s heart is perfectly healthy, thank you very much and Noah is sent to LA a little earlier (boo hoo). Hopefully everything else will play out in the course of the story.

Featuring Luke and Reid front and center, but including a lot of Katie, some Henry, and a few OCs since Luke could use some friends not named Noah, Casey or Ali; plus Chris, Holden, Lily, Bob, Damian, Lucinda, Emma, Faith, Natalie, Ethan, and Jacob…oh yeah, and Noah.[/spoiler]

Chapter 1: Snyder Farm

“Thanks grandma. Merry Christmas.” Luke turned to Emma and gave her a big hug and kiss as he walked out the door. Reid had gotten his arm stuck in his coat, and lagged a few steps behind.

“Dr. Oliver…” began Emma, placing a hand on his arm.

Reid turned on the doorstep and looked at her quizzically. Small talk was never his thing, but he knew he should say something. Luke cast him a sidelong glance so he thought he’d better say it soon. “Everything was great, Mrs. Snyder. Thanks for making me feel at home,” he said, awkwardly patting her on the shoulder.

Luke stifled a chuckle.

“Dr. Oliver,” began Emma again. “You’re welcome any time. And thank you for putting the sparkle back in Luke’s eyes.” She then leaned forward pinched his cheek, and gave him a big bear hug. While Reid rolled his eyes and gave Luke a “WTF do I do now?” look, Luke didn’t bother to hide his smile.

” ‘Night, grandma,” called Luke, as Reid broke free of Emma’s embrace and took his hand.

They walked hand-in-hand down the long driveway to the car, their even gaits matched, step for step. Snow had fallen during the day, and the freezing temperatures created a thin crust over the gravel. Their steps made beat out an even crunch, crunch, crunch rhythm as they walked…
