The 2011 Soap Central ATWT Dankies award ballots are available. If you’re not familiar with them, they do an open ended fan/viewer nomination which closed mid-January and then they just launched their by-show ballot. Winners from each show will go against other shows for the final awards.
Trent Dawson is up for Lead Actor (HOORAY! That was what I put on my pre-nom!). Why do we care? That means that BOTH Van and Eric are up for Supporting (vs Grayson McCouch and Don Hastings). But wait, there’s more…
Best Newcomer: ESS – vs Faith, Chris Hughes, and Gabriel. NO CONTEST.
Most Attractive: ESS – vs Chris, Dusty, Jack. Closer, but still NO CONTEST.
Best Storyline: Gone Too Soon: Luke instantly forms a dislike for Noah’s new doctor, Reid Oliver. The pair’s mutual disdain for one other turns into love, but unfortunately their time is cut short by Reid’s tragic death. vs CarJack, Benry and Nutmeg (!)
Worst Storyline: His Heart Goes On: An illness severely weakens Chris’s heart, and he is in dire need of a transplant. Though he is given one just in time, the success is bittersweet when it’s learned that the heart belonged to Chris’s doctor, Reid Oliver, who died in a train wreck. vs Mick Dante, Chuckles, and Janet pressuring Jack to have a baby to save Liberty. NO COMMENT.
Favorite Character: Luke or Reid or Carly or Henry. Ooh tough call!
Least Favorite Character: Chris or Noah or Janet or Meg. Hahahahahahaha. But another tough call.
Most Memorable Moment: Farewell, My Love: After his car is struck by a train, Reid dies at Memorial after saying goodbye to Luke vs CarJack wedding, Nancy’s death, final globe spinning
Fave Duo: LuRe vs Carjack, Benry and Bob and Kim
Most Missed: ESS vs Meg, Nancy, old Liberty (I think)

Just about the only categories they aren’t listed in are the Actress ones (!) and special guest (Jonathan Pelphrey, Larry Bryggman, Cady McClain or Julianne Moore)

Back in early May 2010, I was thinking about Luke and Reid’s conversation where Luke took the blame for Noah’s accident. I’d never actually seen those segments, so I thought I’d see how close to the mark Reid actually was. The next thing I knew I was curating a YouTube history of Luke’s entire love life. Some incredible acting by Van Hansis – most of it heartbreaking.
It occurred to me that I never actually posted it here. There are lots of bios of Luke available, including good ones on Wikipedia and SoapCentral. The Luke and Noah Fans page also has a great episode guide that goes through his storyline episode by episode using LukeVanFan’s clips. But there’s not something in between that just gives the highlights.
So that’s what I focused on. I created a YouTube playlist that includes most of the major highlights from Luke’s life since 2005. It’s not quite complete, and there are several episodes out of order. Plus they come from different sources, so it’s a bit hard to follow - over time, I hope to clean all that up and embed the video here so you can watch the videos and read the narrative without having to switch windows back and forth.
[spoiler]After watching the videos to put together this playlist, I wrote back in May: “Hasn’t the poor boy suffered enough? GIve him some happiness before the show ends, please!” Not only was he kidnapped twice, almost raped, and held at gunpoint in addition; had reason to believe both dads were dead at various times; but his love life’s been an (ahem) train wreck. How ironically UNprescient I was. 🙁 [/spoiler]

So, without further ado….
The GLAAD Media Awards have been held every year since 1990 and recognize and honor media for their fair, accurate and inclusive representations of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community and the issues that affect their lives.
GLAAD, who have take a LOT of flak over the years for their daytime selections, have decided to drop the Daily Drama category entirely from its 2011 GLAAD Media Awards rather than give the award to ATWT who clearly depicted the only material gay storyline on daytime in 2010.
Although they have previously bestowed the award unopposed (to All My Children in 2004) and with only two entrants (multiple times), this year instead, they’ve thrown in the towel.
Guess they got tired of defending their decision to honor the best among a limited choice of half-pregnant efforts. They’ve been burned badly three years in a row – first with backlash for choosing ATWT despite the blatant Nuke kissing/consummation ban, and then embarrassingly for giving the award to OLTL just as Kish was getting the kibbosh (could ABC have timed their announcement any more poorly?!?).
Historically, GLAAD have erred on the side of giving credit for the good things shows have done, acknowledging that change doesn’t come instantaneously. They’ve recognized that it was historically unrealistic to expect realistic depictions of gay relationships right out of the starting gate, and have recognized (baby) steps made by the daytime shows in the right direction.
I was anecdotally familiar with ATWT’s history with the GLAAD Awards, but upon doing some Googling just now, I found what appears to be a more interesting story than I thought – interesting enough to warrant its own separate post.
