Good buzz for ‘I Hate My Teenage Daughter’!

First of all, the Voice of TV blog has a poll asking, “Vote for the FOX pilots you want to see picked up.” As of right now, IHMTD is dominating over all the other shows (comedies and dramas) with a whopping 75% of the vote. Yow!

As promised, more buzz about the recent screenings of I Hate My Teenage Daughter. From Variety.com:

Pilot screenings have begun in earnest at the broadcast networks this week. And while it’s still early in the process, a few hot prospects have emerged at the Big Four and CW, which will unveil their fall lineups during the week of May 16.

Ethan Hawke, Zooey Deschanel and Jaime Pressly can probably start packing their bags for Fox’s upfront….

At Fox, net execs are said to be swooning over Hawke’s CIA-set drama "Exit Strategy."…

Among half-hours, Deschanel is poised to join her sister, "Bones" star Emily Deschanel, on Fox, in the untitled show from scribe Liz Meriwether. Mike O’Malley domestic comedy "Family Album" has real heat, as does the Pressly-Katie Finneran starrer "I Hate My Teenage Daughter."

Okay, that all sounds good, but for those of you like me who are a little dense on the Industry-speak, here’s what Wikipedia says about upfronts:

In the North American television industry, an upfront is a meeting hosted at the start of important advertising sales periods by television network executives, attended by the press and major advertisers. It is so named because of its main purpose, to allow marketers to buy commercial airtime "up front", or several months before the television season begins.

In the United States, the major broadcast networks’ upfronts occur in New York City during the third week of May, the last full week of that month’s sweeps period. The networks announce their fall primetime schedules, including tentative launch dates (i.e., fall or midseason) for new programming, which may be "picked up" the week before. The programming announcements themselves are usually augmented with clips from the new series, extravagant musical numbers, comedic scenes, and appearances by network stars, and take place at grand venues such as Radio City Music Hall or Carnegie Hall. Most cable networks present earlier in the spring since they usually program for the summer months; press attention to these announcements is usually much lighter.

So on top of Emmy noms (May 11th) and Body of Proof (May 17th) we have the Fox fall schedule announcements to look forward to. May is going to be an interesting month….

Things have been so busy lately I haven’t had much time for fandom activities. But I couldn’t let today pass without observing that it’s the one-year anniversary of Noah’s surgery…which means it’s also the one year anniversary of the THE KISS (#2/3, if you’re counting). The scorching hot, hair-pulling, lights extinguishing and hair-drying kiss that took place over the May 5th and 6th episodes. *thud*

I know this isn’t the episode Eric said he was going to submit, but gee, it’s awfully good. Emmy noms in less than a week.

Now things are about to get interesting!

Deadline.com posted yesterday:

It’s showtime for broadcast pilots as screenings at the networks are kicking off. Today was Day 1 of screenings at ABC, Fox and the CW and Day 4 for CBS, which started on Friday. NBC starts its viewing tomorrow. There were a couple of standouts today. [none from Fox]…It was a ho-hum first screening day at Fox, with comedy I HATE MY TEENAGE DAUGHTER doing OK, drama ALCATRAZ getting mixed reaction, mostly because of its sci-fi content, and comedy TAGGED not faring well.

As a complete industry outsider, I can’t say for sure what this means, but I can guess that this means that the “screenings” were to get the press excited, in which case we might expect to see a slew of new articles in the next few days. Overall, unofficial buzz has been that the show is “pretty good” but we’ll see what the pundits and television beat writers (who as a group probably exert some influence!) have to say.

AfterElton.com news 2011 Hot 100 ballots open

It’s that time of year again, and balloting is finally underway in the 2011 edition of the AfterElton Hot 100. Open-ended nominations are being accepted here until next Friday, May 13th with results due to be published on Monday, May 23rd.

When I searched AE on “Hot 100” I was surprised (and tickled!) to find that the first teaser post announcing the 2008 list featured Van as the main headline!

The Crew at ESS.com have posted a new sneak peak clip from the makers of LLRT, Eric Sheffer Stevens’s indie work-in-process, released last week.

Important note: you can watch the video in HD on full screen and it looks great. If you really want to see it look good, though watch it on LLRT’s Vimeo page because it’s one generation more “native” and the color reproduction is somewhat better (Eric’s skin looks less yellow on my screen). For those of us who have largely watched LuRe via non-HD, edited, YouTube clips (several generations processed) or via streaming, it’s a rare occasion that we get to see such great quality images. So, enjoy!

Okay, I’ll bite. I just saw this over at the ESS.com forum (thanks, Ripley!).

Also, completely off-topic, but interesting is this: The DiversityInc Top 10 Companies for LGBT Employees. The announcement arrived in my email and I was a) surprised to see nearly all of the former Big 8 accounting firms, and to see what traditionally conservative (accounting, insurance and financial services!…plus IBM) companies were on the list.

In the meantime, we’re definitely in the quiet lull before a storm on the fandom front. Things will go berserk in a couple of weeks because:

• Ballots were due into Emmy nominations will be announced on May 11th!
• Eric’s episode of Body of Proof episode airs on May 17th
• EricShefferStevens.com celebrates its one-year anniversary on May 17th as well – well done, ladies and gent! And they’re offering ESS-related goodies! More details after the jump!
• And I think there was something on May 16th, but I can’t for the life of me remember what! (it is a terrible thing to lose one’s!)….
  

Independence Day: Great cast and the moral center of ATWT?

And also more frivolous, and still off-topic: the other night, Independence Day was on TV. Of course I was delighted to watch crotchety and thorn-in-the-side James Rebhorn (Angus Oliver!) get his comeuppance, but what a cast! There was:

• Bill Pullman looking surprisingly yummy as president despite the fact that he should be smacked upside the head for getting in a fighter plane himself (but hey – I didn’t realize that he guest starred on my second-favorite TV show, L&O:SVU in the same episode as Bailey Chase, who was one of the revolving door of Chris Hughes’s, and also a Buffy recurring)
• Randy Quaid’s ludicrously nutty performance
• Jeff Goldblum looking surprisingly hot for the geeky guy
• Brent Spiner (I admit it – I’m a trekkie!)
• Thom Barry (yeah, I like Cold Case, too)
• And of course, Mary McDonnell – how ironic, she plays a first lady who dies here despite a near-invasion of aliens, and then goes on to play a woman who survives an actual-invasion of “aliens” (well, cylons) to become president.

But the one that really got me was Margaret Colin, who plays a member of the President’s staff who also happens to be the ex-wife of Jeff Goldblum’s character. I spent nearly 20 minutes trying to figure out who she was before I finally threw in the towel and looked up her IMDb. And then…of course! She originated the role of Margo Hughes! I didn’t make the connection when I saw the movie before and didn’t realize the actress had gone onto such a big, big-screen role.
