Just a quick note: as I was trying to download videos of the ATWT in Utrecht event earlier this week, I noticed that I could not get YouTube videos to download the same was as in the past.
It turns out YouTube has changed their “video data rules” so that my favorite FireFox 1-Click YouTube Downloader no longer works. However, an alternative program was suggested – the Easy YouTube Downloader. I’ve tested this and can confirm it is just easy as 1-Click, and it works.
I’ve updated and pinned the Downloading Videos from YouTube post in the “Featured Posts” list in the upper right-hand corner of the light gray navigation columns on the right.

One of the contests announced before the Utrecht event was a “romantic scene” writing competition. Attendees were given about a week to write a scene. Here is the original ATWTinNL Facebook post (in the original English!):
A contest! You can write your own romantic scene! If you write one of the best scenes you get to win a very special price (it’s a surprise!) Write in 15 sentences your romantic scene including dialogue. You must describe the location of the scene.
Spoilers for episodes that hadn’t aired were not allowed (so, no Luke and Reid).

[spoiler name=spoiler]So, knowing that Luke and Reid were verboten, and writing a Nuke scene just did nothing for me, I started thinking about ATWT’s het couples and who I could write about. I even scrolled through SOC’s bios to remember who the options were, I decided that my all-time second-favorite couple (after LuRe) was Benry, who were, unfortunately, also off-limits.[/spoiler]
[spoiler name=A/N]It took me awhile to find a couple that wouldn’t be a spoiler, would play well on stage, and that I actually liked. And in fact, I ultimately decided that I really didn’t care for ANY of the couples that much, and settled for Simon and Katie, since at least I thought they had chemistry and some fun.
Since two entries were allowed, I wrote a second scene for Lily and Holden. I grew up with them, and always had a soft spot for them in their early days. Plus I wanted to win (!), so I hoped the organizers would also look kindly on their selection, given Martha Byrne’s presence on the guest panel.
In hindsight, I wish I’d written a Casey/Emily piece. With a couple of days’ perspective post-event, I realized that the last time I remember having a “I HAVE to see this play out on screen” moment (before the Luke and Reid kiss in Dallas) was during the Casey/Emily storyline (can’t remember if it was the elevator scene or the Tom and Margo come home to find Emily in her underwear scene!).
It probably helps that Emily’s my contemporary (or vice versa), but this storyline was the only time I’ve ever actively liked Emily. I liked her vulnerability, and I liked her actually trying to do the right thing for once in her life (pushing Casey away). It’s the only time I didn’t feel like she was only in it for herself. Though, yeah, the Daniel/Casey relationship did have its typical soapy ewww factor.
I just rewatched their abbreviated story on YouTube today and I like them even better now (though it just again reinforces the disparate treatment of gay and straight couples on the show!). And I thought Emily looked better with that mid-length bob than she ever did before or has since (though sheesh – Marnie looked like she was styled by a beauty school drop-out! how is it possible to make someone so beautiful look so dumpy?!?)
I have to give the casting director(s) who cast Billy and Van in their respective roles a lot of credit. Billy has an exuberance and youthful earnestness that really fits Casey. And I took him a little more seriously than I did previously – especially in the scene after Emily snaps out of her poison-induced trance and freaks out about marrying him. Meanwhile, Van seems to be much more soulful, in a way. Though he has those great goofy pictures with Billy, and more on his FB, I can’t see him being Casey (though it would be fun to see Van playing Casey’s sexual take-chargedness!). Great choices, both.

The organizers have posted scans of the article which ran in today’s De Telegraaf on the official ATWTinNL Facebook page. I think they ran a brief item on the front page:

More than a thousand fans went to the theater Saturday to see the cast of the American soap opera As The World Turns. Actress Marnie lay sprawled on the stage so that a fan could take a picture with her. Read more about this frenzied encounter in the VROUW (WOMAN) section.
The main piece ran nearly a full page; a copy of the scan can be found at the bottom of this post. They also published the article on their website which includes a slideshow with 11 photos, including all five that ran in the print edition.
According to Wiki, De Telegraaf ("The Telegraph") is the largest Dutch daily morning newspaper, with a daily circulation of approximately 700,000. De Telegraaf ran a promotional contest prior to the weekend event where they were offering Meet & Greet passes to readers who submitted the most interesting questions.
Okay, this was just too funny to leave out. If any of you have ever experienced weird typos created by relying on spellcheck, then you’ll have an idea of what trouble you might get into relying on a digital translator (except it’s WAY worse!). All of the Dutch-to-English translations here have started with a digital translation. Most passages are either pretty straightforward and valid, or so far off as to be unintelligible. But every so often there comes along a gem that seems plausible, but is nefariously incorrect. This is it. The translation proposed was:
Except there are not many hetero men in the room, the men clearly were dragged by their wives after. However, dozens of gay men, mostly Hansis enthusiastically responding to the homosexual who plays Luke. He is the first in an American soap opera with a male tongue kissing. He thus broke a lance for all gay people in his country and became famous at once.
I’m sure Van would be pleased to hear himself described as “the homosexual who plays Luke” (a fluke that I believe resulted from differences in word order and sentence structure in Dutch vs English). Presumably this should say “who plays Luke, who is gay.” (!). Re: the tongue kissing, I think that’s actually the correct translation, but I’m not sure it’s true (yeah, I know there were rumors about the kiss during the Ameera plotline). And as for breaking a lance for all gay people, is that an expression, or a pun?! Let’s not even go there….

As it turns out, I have the least material available on Van and Martha (my two favorites) because my audio recorder cut out near the end of Liz Hubbard’s portion, and I didn’t figure it out until Paolo Seganti came on. 🙁
That being said, I have enough material on the others that I’ll do separate posts for each as otherwise it will make for one ENORMOUS post.
