Reid: Dr. Hughes needs a doctor to go with him.
Mick: Then go. You’re getting on my last nerve anyway.
Reid: No, not me. Let Dr. Stewart go.

FanFic Update: Simple Gifts Chapter 26

So, does Reid still think Luke cheated on him with a girl? What do you think?

As previously noted, this is the end of a three-part arc (basically the whole Oakdale Now storyline).

Chapter 26: One New Message

In case you want to start from the previous chapter, you can find that here:

Chapter 25: Deal

Or, start from the beginning….

Simple Gifts: A Luke and Reid Fanfiction

Train? What train. Following their first Christmas together, Luke and Reid embark on journeys of self-discovery. Can two simple gifts lead to a happily ever after?

Enjoy,

Extended author’s notes follow the break below for anyone who wants to know more about the story behind this chapter.

Author’s Notes – to be read after reading the chapter. Don’t bother reading if you’d prefer not to see your literary sausage being made (not that this qualifies as literature), or if you consider authors’ random ramblings to be self-indulgent snores!

[spoiler name=A/N:]

As mentioned in the previous Author’s Notes, when I first conceived the Oakdale Now arc, I envisioned Reid and Katie both seeing their relationships mirrored in the show’s on-air component. But it was much more heavy handed, with their feelings being represented much more obviously through the callers and audience members.

Then, like many who have commented, it seemed like a phone call with Luke would be the likely resolution. And even when I wrote this last part, I originally envisioned Reid returning home with his new photo to share a cozy conversation with Luke.

But looking forward a few chapters,  I realized I still wasn’t ready for them to talk, so admittedly, I had to come up with a reason why they wouldn’t have talked. It was then that I thought about who would be calling Reid on his cell phone. And it seemed pretty clear, that in his sad, lonely, pre-Luke life, it would have been no one. He used it to check plane schedules, call a cab (and unfortunately at the end, to call Bay City General). But before Luke called him 36 times, it didn’t seem like he would be expecting many personal calls, so would be unaccustomed to remembering to turn his phone ringer on and off.

I didn’t intend to have back-to-back Dallas flashbacks, but once the cell phone idea came to mind, it was fun to explore Reid’s thoughts during those days and how it was the start of Luke’s changing feelings towards Reid – the key to this whole story arc.

Ultimately, I like the way this played out much better, with Reid thinking through his angst, and Luke largely oblivious to Reid’s turmoil (since of course, Luke knows what he’s thinking!).

Stay tuned for some fluff.

Thanks for reading!

I forgot just how much I love this story. So glad you are continuing it. What I particularly liked in this chapter was hearing the familiar Dallas script from Reid’s POV. So romantic. Looking forward to more!
